In the Hall of the Mountain King

Had fun creating the impression of ancient architecture, and the idea that maybe once there was a great building there. The painting started out pretty abstract until I was happy with the composition. I then blocked out the general forms. I used some photo ref I had from a recent trip to Yosemite. Using the clone brush with opacity settings I threw some texture and color around....then I grabbed a little brush and rendered away haha :-)

Here is a little sketch I started a little while back and threw on the back burner for a bit. I just recently pulled it out and added a little polish for kicks, Hope you like it!

game.....

I have been working recently on a pretty cool Iphone game...This was my first pass at one of the levels, the style was too rough and real, so it got rejected. The second version I did that was more cartoony definitely was more appropriate for the game. But I do like this one, so I think I might finish it out...and either way I had a fun time painting it.

Plein air

So I finally broke out the oil paints...I think it's been about a year since I really used them last. My friend Grim convinced me to go painting in the cemetery near my house. There were some really amazing spots and it was hard to choose one. I wanted something that wasn't too complex because I hadn't held a real paint brush in way too long, but still fun and interesting. The painting was pretty sloppy but I was happy with the overall product. I definitely want to start doing this a lot more, and get out from behind the computer more often.

Star Wars

Here are some color studies....jeez getting a good likeness is really tough...cause it's one thing just polishing a face to look good, but when it still has to look like someone, just one more added challenge.

more stuff

Here is some random stuff....I started doing some quick army dudes while looking at some photos, mostly as a study. Then I decided to do some full on photo studies, and they were super helpful and I'll probably be doing some more. And then I did a free sketch, really focusing on locking down that mood...and have fun :-)

Aliens!!!!

I had a crazy dream the other night about an alien invasion...I think I have been watching too many movies about space on netflix...Anyways it inspired these paintings and I definitely have a ton more ideas. Once I find some more time I will be painting more Alien invasions...they're fun :-)

Monster!

I Started off yesterday sketching a nice little landscape. I then thought, jeez I always paint a landscape, maybe I should do something crazy and paint something that I have never painted before. I started thinking, and I realized I have never really painted a monster before so I thought I would give it a shot and pull out all the tricks I know haha...mostly turquoise rim lighting and overly thick atmosphere haha...

Man Eater!

Just did this for a "Drawing Jam" over at CGhub...It was man eating plants...I probably should have spent a little more time planning it and polishing it...But it was more of a free sketch for fun and boy did I have fun :-)

Illustrator

Just messing around in Illustrator...at first it was really frustrating getting used to the interface since I was so used to only PS. Like I kept pressing return after transforming things and didn't realize you could use transparency in your gradients...but once I got past that, it was actually quite fun, and I realized that once you get used to the program, you can knock things out pretty quick...

Just some recent stuff....First of a digital painting from figure drawing, I have more in my sketch books just have to get around to scanning or photographing them. These are alot of fun to do and you can get pretty far pretty quickly. I usuually sketch it out, and block in an overall middle value and then block in a pretty simple shadow value. I then work some saturation into the core shadow, hit some highlights, and bounce some light into the shadow and whoomp there it is...then some random robot shapes for fun, just messing around with form. Then the ever present dude with a gun, followed by two quick environment sketches( love doing these) and then two photo studies, pictures with multiple people are a pain...have to practice more of those.

PHOTO STUDY

Just been doing some photo studies to practices my value range and get a better understanding of saturation...Trying to understand what is actually happening in the photo, and trying to represent it quickly and efficiently is actually pretty difficult. These are also just studies so I spent about an hour or two on each one, more focusing on getting a good representation of what the light is actually doing in the photo as opposed to pounding out all the detail.

Morning sketch....just messing around with some different ideas...then realized I was back to rendering rocks...which I think I spend 80% of my time doing and realized it was time to move on .

HI! Just been painting away....Um here is a robot in the rain....yep I do love crazy robots. The next two sketches were done right after downloading sketchling's newest swatch set from CGhub.com(http://cghub.com/scripts/view/178/). It goes the main colors across the top and a warm/cool grad downward. It was interesting to use because almost all of the swatches are near 100% saturation, which is completely opposite of the way I usually paint. I almost always paint pretty desaturated (which I really like) and too dark(which I'm working on), and that is illustrated in my last painting which is a landscape I did for fun...love them clouds and rocks...can't get enough!
